MANGKA / NONGTHANG LEIMA
Posted by: NeBuzz Uploaded: 20-May-15

Celebrated as the next rising star of Manipur, Mangka Mayanglambam’s unique voice and Pena (traditional string musical instrument) performances is what makes her stand out.

Being the daughter of Mangangsana Mayanglambam, a Pena maestro, Mangka’s love for traditional folk song and dance started when she was very young. She started giving live performances as a child artist on the radio and her first solo performance was when she was in Grade 8.

Donning the traditional clothes and wearing her hair long with a flower tucked behind her ear, Mangka is admired by many for reviving and popularizing rare Manipuri folk songs. She has performed across India and in other countries like Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

She recently launched her debut album ‘Chingda Satpi’ (The One That Grows in The Hills) produced by the award-winning filmmaker Oinam Doren– founder and director of Ourvillage Films. The album is a collection of 10 tracks that have been carefully chosen to showcase the best of Manipuri folk songs.

“The first time I met Mangka was through her voice. I heard her singing inside her house. She was just 12 years old then. A few weeks later, the second time I went to her house was to request her to sing for my award-winning short film ‘My Hands’. Seasons have passed. Mangka has moulded herself into a multi-talented artist. Now she can dance. She can play the pena. She knows how to look beautiful….But most importantly she has a dream. And she believes in herself. I present to you “the next cultural ambassador of Manipur to the world.” ~ Oinam Doren
