NESFAS/Indigenous Terra Madre 2015
Posted by: NEBUZZ Uploaded: 26-Oct-15

Between the 3rd to the 7th of November 2015, Shillong will hit international headlines as the world converges for the International Terra Madre 2015, to establish its theme “The Future We Want: Indigenous Perspectives and Actions”…a call from mother earth. A celebration of food, flavours and a cultural fiesta of everything timeless!

As one treads through many timeless stories from different cultures around the world, most are tied to the motherland and its people. For the people of Meghalaya this theme has been a recurring celebration of the land’s indigenous harvest and Mother Earth over the last five years as its namesake festival the “Mei-Ramew”. This year the world comes to Meghalaya in the form of the “International Mei-Ramew”  (IMR 2015) or as the world calls it Indigenous Terra Madre (ITM 2015) as global gastronomical specialists join them from the aboriginal lands of Australia, the Amazonian Indians, native American Indians and other indigenous communities from all over the world.

The significance of the event in Shillong this year is that it is only the second time that the event is happening globally after its predecessor in 2011 in Jokkmokk, Sweden- hosted by Slow Food Sampi - the indigenous peoples of northern Europe.

We take a look at the North-East Slow Food and Agro-biodiversity Society or NESFAS and speak to some of its team members including its visionary Chairman, Phrang Roy. Since its inception in 2012, NESFAS has assembled an eclectic team of young, passionate and committed individuals from Italy, UK, Germany and India which has helped in spreading an effective and functional network of over 40 villages in the north eastern states of India with the aim of advocating the principles of its two main partners i.e. Slow Food International and the Indigenous Partnership.
